Roman Catholics

Oh boy!

The Roman Catholic Church is, and is likely to remain, the sole occupier of my 'uncertain' list. Why? Because, in spite of the many objections listed below, they do believe in Jesus Christ, trust in his sacrifice on the cross for salvation (hopefully), they believe he's God in the flesh, and in fact they at least claim to believe most of the important Christian doctrines. But their religion is horribly, horribly distorted and misguided - to the point that I feel unable to say 'they're Christians', but also unwilling to totally write them off. Confusing stuff....

Primary Objection

Difficult one, this. I think the major one has to be the atonement idea - the 'do this to be forgiven'. Goes hand-in-hand with Purgatory and all the related nonsense, in that it's a denial of salvation by grace.

Other Objections

Praying to (and possible worship of) Mary and bygone saints. (Mary is not a very important person in the Bible, and was not always a Christian.) The authority of the Pope outweighs the authority of the Bible (which is probably what led to this mess in the first place). Some of the Popes were definitely not Christians - or if they were, they sucked (check out the Crusades). They call their priests 'father' (Matthew 23:9: 'And do not call anyone on earth 'father', for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.').
